Words That Land · Communication

It looks like they're not listening. Usually the message isn't landing.

Sound familiar?

  • You ask three times, then you shout, then you feel awful.
  • "Go and get ready" ends with them standing in the hallway, stuck.
  • They can't tell you what's wrong, so it comes out as behaviour.
  • Sarcasm, jokes and hints go straight past them, or land badly.

Your report

Start with a report about your family

Every family is different, so Words That Land begins with your child and your home.

  1. Answer 30 questions about your home and your child. It takes about ten minutes.
  2. Get a report written about your answers: what's already working, your two best starting points, and a plan for the next two weeks.
  3. It points you to the lessons and printables that matter most for you, so you don't have to work through everything.
  4. Take it again in a few weeks and see what's changed. The retake comes with the lessons.

You can start free. The 3-minute check shows your first two starting points straight away, on screen. The full written report comes with the programme.

Your starting points: giving instructions and talking when feelings run high.

This week: one small change, chosen from your own answers, with the lesson and printable that go with it.

What's actually going on

Most of what looks like defiance is a communication breakdown. A three-step instruction, said once, while they're busy with something else, can be more than a neurodivergent brain can hold. Change how the message is built and delivered, and a lot of the conflict goes with it.

One step, then wait

Give one instruction at a time, in plain words, then count to ten in your head before you say anything else. Repeating or rephrasing too soon makes them start processing again from the beginning.

Free to use tonight. It's one idea from the programme.

Zoe Aspinall

About Zoe

“Every environment either supports a child's brain or drains it. Most homes drain it, not because anyone got it wrong, but because nobody designed them for that child's brain at all.”

Zoe Aspinall MSc is a SEND specialist teacher and a SEND parent, with 30 years' experience in classrooms, school leadership and alternative provision, in the UK and internationally. She holds an MSc in Applied Neuroscience from King's College London, and developed the Ecological Inclusion Framework by bringing together research from neuroscience, psychology, communication and environmental design. Every NeuroInclusive programme is built on it, and turns it into practical changes you can make at home this week.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need a diagnosis?

No. The programmes are about the environment around your child, so they're useful whether you have a diagnosis, are on a waiting list, or just know your child's brain works differently.

How is it delivered?

Online, in your own time. You sign in, take the programme's assessment, read your report and download the book. If you add the toolkit or the lessons, they appear in the same place. You can start the same evening, then work through the rest at your own pace.

Is it only for autism or ADHD?

No. It's for any child whose nervous system finds everyday life harder: autistic, ADHD, sensory differences, anxiety, or no label at all. The assessment looks at what your child finds hard, whatever the reason.

What ages is it for?

The ideas work at any age, from little ones to teenagers. Where things look different at different ages, the lessons and printables say so, and the assessment is about your child as they are now.

How long do I have access?

It's yours to keep. Everything you buy stays in your account, and everything you download is yours. Revisit it as your child grows.

Is this therapy or medical advice?

No. It's practical education for parents, grounded in neuroscience. It doesn't replace your doctor or any of the professionals working with your child, and it works well alongside them.
